Butterfly Love by Yan Shu
The chrysanthemums by the railing grieve in mist, the orchids weep in dew. The light chill of the silk curtains, as swallows fly away in pairs. The bright moon does not understand the bitterness of parting, its slanting light pierces the vermilion doors till dawn.
Last night, the west wind stripped the trees bare. Alone I climbed the tower, gazing to the world's far end. I longed to send a letter, yet across the endless mountains and rivers, how could it ever reach you?
Annotation: Prime Minister Yan, being a man of wealth and leisure, could compose such splendid verses. How can we, children of humble families, appreciate such leisurely elegance?
